Infant Dentists in Grand Rapids and Rockford
Infant Dentistry for Lifetime Health
One of the most important appointments you can make for your child is the first dental visit! At SixOneSix Dentistry for Children, our objective is to help your child develop a positive attitude towards dentistry and oral health care that lasts a lifetime.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry along with the American Academy of Pediatrics encourage parents and caregivers to establish a dental home by a child’s first birthday. Those first baby teeth are very special and believe it or not, we have a lot to discuss at this visit!
Why the Early Visit?
The focus of a child's first dental visit is education. Tooth decay is the number one chronic infectious disease among children in the U.S. and it is almost completely preventable!
Early intervention is aimed at preventing and mitigating common pediatric oral diseases and conditions while initiating a relationship between the pediatric dentist, the patient, and the parents/caregivers. Waiting until a child is 3 or 4 years of age may be too late. We consistently see the benefit of early intervention and ultimately, it is our goal is to enhance each child’s opportunity for a lifetime free of dental disease.
What to Expect at Your Baby's First Dental Visit
At the first visit, also known as the well-baby visit, you will meet with either Dr. Aimee, Dr. Chris, or Dr. Lauren and will discuss infant/toddler hygiene, feeding, teething, the importance of pacifiers and finger sucking as soothing mechanisms in the early years, what to do in the case of an injury, and will also discuss common mistakes parents make that can lead to early childhood decay. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to spend time asking questions at this visit!
At the one-year (well-baby) visit, an exam will be done in a knee-to-knee fashion (insert photo/video here), which allows a safe and efficient way to examine your child. A proper oral exam is important in diagnosing oral health, diseases, and potential risk factors, which the dentist will then discuss with you.
